Great Men, Lost Souls

April 24, 2014
This is my
contribution to National Poetry Month. My poem is a response to a Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow poem, shown below.
Ah, the
"heights" which men were thought to have reached
When such persons were considered "great,"
Indeed, these "heights" were only great in terms of their cost
As these "great" men their souls they had lost.
When such persons were considered "great,"
Indeed, these "heights" were only great in terms of their cost
As these "great" men their souls they had lost.
from The Ladder of
St. Augustine
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
"The heights by great men reached and kept
Were not attained by sudden flight,
But they, while their companions slept,
Were toiling upward in the night."
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
"The heights by great men reached and kept
Were not attained by sudden flight,
But they, while their companions slept,
Were toiling upward in the night."
